New Year, Not-So-New Me

Happy New Year! We've made it through yet another year, one that many claimed was the "worst year ever." Personally and professionally, 2016 was a better than 2015. I finished my first year as a photographer for a couple of local magazines, I made new friendships while pursuing my Associates of Arts (which, with any luck, I'll be receiving at the end of this year), my work was published in 8 different magazines, and I was able to quit my day job and dive head first into the world of photography.

I'm starting 2017 with new opportunities, a fresh view on the world (thanks to the winter school break), and a new lens (check back soon for more on that on a later blog). But what I'm not starting off the new year with is resolutions. I never keep them, and when I realize about three months into the year that I've lost track of how I was supposed to be improving my life, I get disappointed in myself. Not this year.

All I can hope is that I bring the values and determination that I ended 2016 with into 2017 and that I continue to capture beautiful moments. So, without further delay, here are my 16 favorite images from 2016.

January 2016My favorite shot from one of the first photo shoots of 2016 and for 92078 Magazine. This beautiful young lady runs her own business in Encinitas, Jasmine's Bunting Co.

January 2016I took this during my first trip to the Temecula Valley Wine Country. A great example of the beauty of Golden Hour.

March 2016Probably my most favorite image of the year (maybe of my career). This candid shot was taken during a group photo shoot at Swami's Beach in Encinitas.

March 2016These two were so cute. Another great session for 92078 Magazine.

May 2016For my final portfolio for my Applied Digital Photography class. I learned so much about lighting and discovered new projects that I want to pursue.

June 2016At the San Diego County Fair. Love the bokeh in this image.

June 2016East Texas. We surprised my dad when my husband and I flew to Dallas for Father's Day. We went camping at this beautiful lake, and this was taken right before sunset as a small storm rolled by.

August 2016Another session for 92078. Beautiful and talented young lady. This was taken at the San Elijo Fountain.

September 2016Practiced long exposures during Golden Hour at the beach with a couple of fellow classmates.

October 2016For 92081 Magazine. I love the colors in this image!

November 2016After 9 months, I got back to creating some more light painting images using flowers and Christmas lights.

November 2016So glad I got to capture this beautiful moment between these two. Taken right after Jose popped the question at Ponte Inn in Temecula.

December 2016A perk of living in Southern California? The weather is always perfect for a trip to the beach! And this family was so much fun to photograph.

December 2016My favorite flower, the rose. The color and texture in this image is what puts this in my top 16 images of the year.

December 2016It's not every day I get to photograph a beauty queen! Such a great model, and a fun session.

Christmas 2016Last, but definitely not least, this macro shot of a gorgeous Christmas ornament. One of my last images of the year.

Here's wishing everyone a happy and prosperous 2017!!
